Summary:

Study conducted under the TREAT Asia Network and funded by amfAR.

The TREAT Asia Observational Database's primary study objective is to:

  • Examine HIV natural history, including the relationship between access to ART, demographics, and disease progression; short- and long-term responses to ART; impact of co-infections; HIV drug resistance patterns; and toxicity of first- and second-line regimens.

Secondary objectives include the following, and will be further identified as the study progresses:

  1. Facilitate the development of rigorous methods and standards of data collection across the region, enhancing the quality of local data and improving scientific capacity for operational research.

  2. Assess the risk of and factors associated with opportunistic infections (OI) and other AIDS-related illnesses (e.g., TB, Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia, HBV, HCV, HPV).

  3. Explore risk and outcomes of chronic diseases (e.g., hypertension, diabetes) and serious non-AIDS related endpoints (e.g., cardiovascular disease, liver and kidney failure).

  4. Examine social and clinical factors driving the epidemic (e.g., male-to-male sex, injection drug use).

  5. Study cancer risk, diagnostic testing capacity for oncogenic viruses, and types of cancers diagnosed in higher- and lower-resourced settings among HIV-infected persons.
